The Birkie returns to its traditional course

HAYWARD, Wis. — Despite a slow start to the snow season, the 51st annual Birkebeiner race is back in full force. The lack of snow last year led to an alternate approach, and that threatened to be the case this year as well.

Traditionally, the course runs from Cable to Hayward in Wisconsin, as will be the case this year. Last year, the race had to be run in short loops within Cable, and required the use of snow guns.

While Birkie officials are excited to get back to the true nature of the race, they say trail conditions are still not ideal, with areas of low snow, grass and even leaves throughout.

Birkie week kicks off Wednesday, Feb. 19th.
