Forgotten History in the Northland Drives North Shore Bucket List Campaign

Glensheen Officials Advocate for Visitors to Tour Entire North Shore Scenic Drive

The Northland is full of historic memories, especially when it comes to the Congdon Family.

Iron Ore Magnate Chester Congdon used his fortune and power to keep this scenic area pristine and accessible.

On Friday, officials with the Glensheen Mansion kicked off a new campaign, all to keep Chester’s wish, a true reality.

The mission of the “North Shore Bucket List” is to have visitors and locals see the best of Minnesota’s famous North Shore, just like Chester visioned for the future.

Five memorable stops are included on the list, from Duluth, Glenseen Mansion, Two Harbors, up the Shore to Gooseberry Falls, the Lighthouse at Split Rick, and topping off the trip in Grand Marais.

“We really want our visitors to see all of the North Shore, not just Two Harbors to Gooseberry, we want them to see Duluth up to Grand Marais,” Glensheen Director Dan Hartman said.

Chester Congdon was the visionary and main financial supporter of the North Shore Scenic Drive project. Originally he wanted it to be called the “Lake Superior International Highway.”
