Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan visits Duluth to talk Child Tax Credit

DULUTH, Minn. – Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan was in Lincoln Park discussing the new advance payment option for the Child tax Credit.

She stopped at Community Action Duluth to tour their Free Tax Prep site and talk about a new advance payment option for the Child Tax Credit.

The Child Tax Credit puts money back in the hands of families in need.

New this year is an option for advance payments of next year’s Child Tax Credit.

“This program alone is expected to cut child poverty by a third. We saw incredible uptake last year, and I’ll give you an update on numbers right now, literally handed to me my hot little hand for the child tax credit. So far this year, 89,000 families have received it. That’s $240 million and 182,000 children. And for the advanced Child Tax Credit, which we’ll talk more about in just a second here, just went over 10,000 people. The real number, because real numbers don’t end in zero, is 10,092 which is 11% of folks who have received the Child Tax Credit, have decided to do that advanced payment.” stated Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan.

Those who opt in to advance payments would receive their full 2024 tax credit, part of their 2025 tax credit payments in three payments over the year, and the rest of their 2025 child tax credit when they file their 2025 taxes.

Minnesota is the first state to allow these advance payments.

“The bottom line is, when we increase family income, we improve child outcomes, and that really has been the focus of the Walz-Flanagan administration is to make Minnesota the best place in the entire country to raise a child.” said Lt. Gov. Flanagan.
