Two Men From Illinois Assaulted Man in Hibbing Over Owed Money, Charges Claim

HIBBING, Minn. – A daylight attack by two men in Hibbing last Friday against another man who owed them money resulted in a high-speed chase, authorities say.

Two men have been charged in connection to an assault on another man in Hibbing last Friday. According to the charges, the suspects, Kimonte Travion Cadge, 27, and Genio Taroyes Keller, 31, are both from Illinois.

Police reports state that on the afternoon of Mar. 7, a Hibbing Officer responded to the Short Stop Gas Station for reports that a male had been assaulted. The victim had reportedly walked into the gas station and asked the clerk to lock the door.

Officers located the male victim who was bleeding and needed multiple stitches to close wounds on his head and face. The victim told officers that he was attacked with a “wooden handle” by two males, one of them he identified as Cadge. At one point during the assault the handle broke, and he struggled to prevent himself from being stabbed by the sharp end.

Speaking to police, the victim said the two males had pulled him into the yard of 3706 4th Ave. West and repeatedly struck him with the handle. The victim said he was targeted because he owed the men money.

He was able to escape the attack by running down an alley and hiding in a garage before he continued to the gas station.
When police initially found the suspect’s vehicle, described as a Chevy Malibu with California plates, at a nearby gas station, the men fled. “Numerous law enforcement officers pursued the defendants with their squad lights and sirens activated,” the report said.

The chase led onto Highway 37, where police said the vehicle reached speeds “of at least 100mph.” Police reports said that stop sticks brought the suspects’ vehicle to stop, but both exited the vehicle and ran into the woods. Both were apprehended shortly after.

Following the suspects’ apprehension, officers returned to the scene of the alleged assault. Nobody answered when officers knocked on the front and back doors of the house. Officers noted in the police report that they found blood splatter and a broken wooden handle in the property’s yard. The blood was sent to the BCA for DNA analysis.
