Apostle Islands Storm Damage Cause Area Closures
Widespread damage after severe storms plummel through the area.
Severe thunderstorms with high winds swept through the Northland in the early hours of Thursday causing widespread storm damage.
Fortunately, all campers in the area are accounted for and safe.
Park staff are assessing the damage, but there are numerous downed trees, which are resulting in some closures of campsites and trails. Islands hit hardest include Cat, Oak, Michigan, Sand, and Stockton Islands.
Current closures:
- Cat Island campsite
- Manitou Island trail
- Sand Island trail from East Bay to the light station
- Stockton Island campsties 7, 8, and 11
- Stockton Island Julian Bay trail
Further assessments are underway to determine the extent of downed trees blocking other trails. Park staff is working to re-open high priority campsites and trails.
