Knowing Your Neighbor: ‘Kindred Heart’ Introduces Unique Community Outlet
SUPERIOR, Wis. — Tower Avenue in Superior is filled with traffic. And after listening around, one can quickly become overwhelmed with the sounds of everyday life. But since Kindred Heart has opened it’s doors, customers are able to hone in on a peaceful, quiet, and calm atmosphere.
“I do astrology, tarot and chakra work. I’m a registered holistic therapist. But I had this dream of creating community in some kind of way,” said Mikinzie Schilling , the owner of Kindred Heart. “So we had twenty five days to get this together.”
After securing the storefront, Mikinzie Schilling, the owner of Kindred Heart, was destined to fill the shop with as many locally made products as she could. But that wasn’t the only thing that filled the space.
“And it’s really cool because all the local artists that we’ve had, we’ve created this almost sisterhood, kind of a thing,” said Schilling. “And I don’t mean to disclose one of the artists who is a male, and he’s in the back. But you know for the majority of the creators, it is all women and I think it’s really amazing to create something like that.”
The space is also home to the opportunity for tarot readings, chakra cleansings, and other spirituality experiences. Getting spirituality to become more mainstream is something Schilling is striving for.
“Normalized spirituality will really I think help the Northland quite a bit,” said Schilling. “Part of normalizing it is that you can be into any of this, and find a place here. Find a place in spirituality. Even if you don’t believe in everything I do. People are really surprised at you know, how I handle things really lightly. And they’re like “that’s not what I was expecting at all”. I was expecting it to be really scary, or like this, or being told I’m going to die soon. You know what I mean? So there’s a really a more peaceful reaction definitely.”
From sun catchers, to skincare, to art, and even untapped life advice. There truly is something for everyone at ‘Kindred Heart’.
“I think it’s really important ‘Kindred Heart’ is here. I just again, like you said, there’s nothing else like this here in the Northland. And I think it’s so needed to find a place of just healing,” said Schilling. “We have people coming just to sit at this point and I think that’s lovely. I love to hear that people feel at ease and feel at peace here. Because with everything that’s going on in the world right now, and there’s a lot, you know I won’t go into details with that but people need to find harmony somewhere.”
