Wrenshall School District Closes 5th Grade Enrollment
WRENSHALL, Minn. — Wrenshall Public School District closes enrollment for their 5th grade class for the upcoming 2025-26 school year.
The school district has seen a rise in student enrollment in recent years.
This school year, the district had to split up their kindergarten and 4th grade students into two separate classrooms.
The Wrenshall Board of Education and teachers collaborated to established target class size to ensure quality one-on-one attention for students. Between their 4th grade and 6th grade classes, they enroll up to 25 students per class.
The school board said when classes get full, families are put onto a wait list. If there’s enough students on the wait list, the school considers opening another section of that grade.
In a email statement, the Wrenshall School Board Chair Mary Carlson wrote, “The goal of the class size targets is to provide the best education we possibly can. When class sizes get too big, the quality of education suffers. Despite proposed cuts to education from both the state and federal governments, Wrenshall remains committed to providing the highest quality education possible and target class sizes are a big part of that. Many districts are moving to larger class sizes to help balance their budgets. Wrenshall isn’t doing that. In addition, we have expanded our CTE program, invested in new curriculum, and have protected electives such as art, band and library.”
