Cooper Elementary Students Get Hands on Learning for Earth Day

SUPERIOR, Wis.– 4th Graders from Cooper Elementary in Superior had the opportunity to get some hands-on learning for Earth Day.

The 4th graders got their hands dirty this morning at the Wade Park in Superior. They partnered up with the City of Superior to clean up trash.

After they collected, the kids got to sort it all out, weigh it out, and tally up the most popular finds.

Cooper Elementary school has been actively participating in Earth Day cleanups for several years.

The teachers are hoping students will remember this experience when it comes to properly throwing away trash.

“In my science class, we talk about the environment all the time. So, I think this is a great this is just a great example so they can see some of the things that the plastic breaks down into tiny microplastics, and that it’s even worse for the environment. Or even their food garbage that gets blown away. So, we have some piece of furniture here. So, there’s a lot of things we find that should definitely not be in nature,” explained Sue Correll, a 4th Grade teacher at Cooper Elementary.

After the cleanup, the kids headed over to the Government Center in Superior.

Where they got to learn about keeping the Earth clean, as well as the importance of avoiding bad habits, such as smoking and e-cigarettes.

And that it results in harm for both the kids, and the environment.
