The Potential Futures of Lester Golf Course

Lester Park Developer

DULUTH, Minn. — The future of the Lester golf course has been up for decision over the past half decade… without a clear answer. we could be getting closer.
a “working group” presented the framework for three ideas on what the property could become to the city council.

One plan proposed by developer Tom Sunnarborg, suggested a large-scale, professionally executed mixed-use development, including a hotel, two restaurants, various shops and office… along with public gathering areas and about 450 housing units.

Another idea was golf-centric development focused on accessibility and inclusivity. it would feature a simplified course suitable for disabled golfers, as well as young and elderly players.

The third idea was quick-start golf and multi-use plan. it would restart golf soon… then overtime add housing, courts for various sports, hiking and biking trails, winter sports
amenities,

Mayor Roger Reinert hopes a form of one of those ideas makes it into the council’s hands for discussion soon.

“I am absolutely committed to that we will bring something to the city council this year. Lester has not sat for five years; it cannot sit for a sixth. It is too much of an asset on our community to just be sitting there.” said Mayor Roger Reinert.

Now that the top ideas are revealed the city will likely be asking for developer ideas for the property.

“While I know some folks are disappoint there wasn’t a big reveal from the presentation to the council, there were important elements that came out of that work that they all shared in common. and so, it will be absolutely sensible for us to take those pieces and put them into an ask for someone to think about it. a big plan there,” said Mayor Reinert.

The next steps would include:

Formally asking for master plan proposals that would honor large parts of the ideas presented by the working group.
