OTTAWA, Can. — Minnesota Senator (D) Amy Klobuchar and other U.S. Senators from both Democrat and Republic parties met with Canada’s newly elected Prime Minister Mark Carney on Friday in hopes to better U.S. and Canada’s recent relations.

Senator Klobuchar was part of the first group of lawmakers that visited Canada’s Prime Minister.

The bipartisan group of lawmakers asked the Prime Minister to renegotiate with President Trump to roll back tariffs and open boarders between U.S. and Canada.

Since President Trump’s tariffs went into effect the prices of many Canadian goods and commodities, like aluminum and oil, have cut access to American and Canadians consumers across boarders.

The group of lawmakers hoped that this meeting would strengthen Canada U.S. relations.

“We wanted to make very clear that despite the tariffs that were recently assets on Canada that we want to make this better. We are hopeful that negotiation between the President and the new Prime Minister will be fruitful,” said Sen. Klobuchar. “Because this is our biggest trading ally out of Minnesota. It’s is the biggest trading ally for 34 states. It’s the country that fought by our side in two World Wars and was the first on the ground after 9-11 to help our county. And in Minnesota it is over $22-billion dollars in trading every single year.”

According to Sen. Klobuchar, Prime Minister Carney is committed to reestablish Canada and the United States as strong trading partners and will be negotiated as part of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
