Hundreds Gather for First ‘Going Bananas Run’
DULUTH, Minn. — Hundreds of people went “bananas” in Lincoln Park, on Saturday, for the first ever Going Bananas Run.
The 5K was in partnership with Project Joy, a non-profit steered towards ending food insecurity in the Northland.
Over 430 runners dressed up in giant bananas, all in hopes to beat the gorilla released after a 2-minute head start. If the gorilla doesn’t catch up with the runners the proceeds from the run will go directly to project joy.
“The goal of this is to be super simple and just a fun time. So our goal is just to keep it laid back,” said Andrew Weisz, the organizer of the event. “We’re honored to host this race in Lincoln Park — the business community has been great. We’re just thankful for all those who took the time to come out and go for a banana run.”
Even in the 5K’s first year, many spectators came out to cheer on the banana runners, and warn them of the gorilla gaining closely behind them.
With the massive success with the first “Going Bananas Run” organizers are already planning on how to make next year’s run more bananas.
