Superior Police Chief Notes Positive Trend with Addiction & Drug Related Crime
SUPERIOR, Wis.– Superior Mayor Jim Paine shared online that after years of addressing addiction and drug related crime, their hard work is paying off.
Superior Police Chief Paul Wintersheidt also stated that Superior is not alone and said that this is a national trend.
Reasons for this upward trend relates to programs such as ‘Pathways to Hope’, and diligent outreach opportunities.
He also shared that crimes oftentimes related to drug use, such as shoplifting has significantly decreased as well.
“We need to constantly be on top of emerging trends, to create innovative solutions, to address it. If we try to do what we did to combat drugs back in 2011 when I was narcotics investigator, there would be a lot more deaths on the street. We want to reduce the harm,” said Paul Wintersheidt, Superior Chief of Police.
The police department has been trying to remain involved in non-enforcement related events in the community.
It helps create a bond and relationship, and down the road it maintains public safety, and community engagement.
“If we can impact just one person’s life, if we can even a minimal impact, is going to make sure somebody is, you know, at their family’s Christmas party next year, you know, they’re going to celebrate the holidays with their family, where they otherwise might have died from an overdose. And so even if it’s just one or two people, it’s all worth it,” said Wintersheidt.
Winterscheidt also said that if you or someone you know could benefit from some of the recovery programs the department offers, getting help is as easy as calling the front desk, and learning about your options.
