Duluth City Council Passes Renters Rights Proposal
DULUTH, Minn.– On Monday night, Duluth City Council discussed a proposal mandating landlords more information about rights and resources before signing a lease.
The proposal says landlords must provide tenants a summary of tenants’ rights protected by Minnesota Laws, as well as contact information for the City of Duluth’s Life Safety Division and One Roof Community Housing.
During this meeting, City Council Roz Randorf spoke about how this could benefit the area.
Councilor Randorf said, it will solve collective issues many renters experience.
“A core underlying issue became crystal clear, rented renters are left in the dark, unsure of what protections they currently have, what standards landlords must meet, and where to turn when there’s a problem. So, this ordinance changes that it brings transparency, it empowers tenants with knowledge,” said Duluth City Councilor Roz Randorf.
In a few weeks, after the passing of the ordinance, there will be several changes to Chapter 29-A of Duluth City Code.
A few of them include additional requirements for rental licensing, inspections and enforcement, landlord education, and increased penalties for non-compliance and violations
