‘Flame of Hope’ Torch Run for Summer Special Olympics
DULUTH, Minn. — Today, local Special Olympic athletes and the Duluth Police Department held their annual torch run.
It was part of the lead up to kick off the Minnesota Summer Special Olympics in the Twin Cities this weekend.
A group of runners and cyclists carried the ‘Flame of Hope’ over 10 miles across the city.
The torch run raises awareness and helps fundraise for the Special Olympics.
But the engagement between the Officers and Athletes also builds camaraderie.
“I know all the athletes here today that will be joining us for the run and the bike, and it’s cool to be able to see them in public when I’m working, or maybe I’m off not working, and it’s just a it’s a special relationship. They’re almost like family to you, and we’re like family to them.” said Jeremy O’Connor, Duluth Police Officer.
Mayor Reinert also joined on the run.
The Duluth Police Department has been doing events with The Special Olympics since the 80’s.
