Shiitake Mushroom Workshop Teaches the Basics

CLOQUET, Minn. – The Grow Your Own Shiitake Mushrooms Workshop was held at the Cloquet Public Library

People met inside the library to learn about shiitake mushrooms and how to grow them at home through a hands-on demonstration from a local educator and mushroom grower. The demonstration taught attendees how to
start a shiitake mushroom log, what supplies are needed, the type of habitat, the growing cycles, harvesting skills, and how to store them throughout the year.

“It’s just a really great thing, and people get to see it and do it and bring it home, and they learn a lifelong skill,” said Shawn Bernhardt, Duluth Community Education mushroom grower.

For those interested in starting their own shiitake mushroom growing journey, right now is the time to get started on your mushroom logs, as it takes roughly a year for them to grow.
