Sheriff’s Office: Convincing phone scam going around
ITASCA COUNTY, Minn. – The Itasca County Sheriff’s Office is warning people about a very convincing phone scam.
They said there a “dangerous new scam going around”.
The caller is pretending to represent a collection agency.
They say the caller knows your name, Social Security number, current and past addresses, and even details about vehicles you’ve owned.
The Sheriff’s Office even warns the callers have spoofed their Called ID, making it appear the call is from a local phone number.
The callers are also trying to pressure people by using urgent or threatening language like legal action or wage garnishment.
The scam also pushes for immediate payment, often through suspicious methods like gift cards, wire transfers, or mobile payment apps.

It’s also very important to never provide any personal or financial information, even if the caller does have some information.
If you get a call like this, hang up and contact the company they claim to represent.
You’re also asked to report the incident to the FTC (ftc.gov) and your local police department.
