DULUTH, Minn. — Mayor Reinert Officially proclaimed July 1st as Navy Day for the City of Duluth.

This proclamation helps recognize the history between Duluth and the U.S. Navy.

The Navy Band and Ceremonial Guard performed at the proclamation.

Duluthians and Navy Sailors gathered for the ceremony.

The Sailors will be here all week, at public events to engage with the community.

“The one thing that I would specifically appeal to the citizens to do is go up and engage with sailors, talk to them, ask them why they joined the Navy in the first place, and why they stay today, and I promise you will see the best of America.” said Rear Admiral Mike Brown, United States Navy.

Also in attendance was the Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. Minnesota.

The states namesake is a nuclear powered fast attack submarine stationed out of Guam.

It’s one of only five nuclear submarines operating on Guam’s Naval Base.

The Commanding Officer brought three of his sailors along as well.

“The most important part of my ship is my crew, and the opportunity for them to come here and meet the people from our namesake is nothing but an honor. And we look forward to spending time with all of you, learning from you, and hopefully you can reach out to us so that we can continue to share our stories.” said Commander Jeffrey Cornielle, Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. Minnesota.

Navy Week events will be held all over the area.

We will have coverage of some of the events, but the full list of the public events can be found here.
