Standoff in Itasca County

DEER RIVER, Min. – The Itasca County Sheriff’s Office and Deer River Police Department had about a three hour stand-off during the morning of Friday, August 15, 2025.
Kyle David Kannas, 36, of Deer River, was wanted on warrants.
Law enforcement believed Kannas was inside a Deer River residence and possibly armed.
The Sheriff’s Office says there were repeated attempts to communicate with Kannas and safely resolve the situation.
Kannas did not respond.
After about three hours Kannas was located inside the home in Deer River and taken into custody.
The Itasca County Sheriff’s Office tells FOX21 Kannas was wanted on a probation violation warrant, “with original charges being 3rd deg controlled substance and felon in possession of firearm”.
There were no injuries to the suspect, officers, or community members were reported.
Kannas was transported to the Itasca County Jail.
