Carlton County Animal Rescue Plans to Build Shelter in Cloquet

CLOQUET, Minn. — Carlton County Animal Rescue has purchased land to build a local animal shelter.

A seven acre lot near the Cloquet Business Park will be the permanent home of the animal rescue.

The building will allow for animals to be sheltered by the rescue itself, as the current foster based program sees volunteers housing animals.

Since launching in 2023, the rescue has been able to provide a temporary home or vet care to over 1,000 animals and completed adoptions for over 800 cats and dogs. The shelter will allow even more animals in the area to be rescued.

“We get requests like every day, some days we get 10 people reaching out for help. People are telling us they have, you know, there’s 10 cats on their property, or they just found a litter of puppies, they have dogs, they need to go, they’re at risk of losing their housing, all kinds of different reasons that come up that animals are getting displaced,” Erin Thompson, Carlton County Animal Rescue Board President said.

Carlton County Animal Rescue will be holding a gala on September 27. The event looks to celebrate the accomplishments of the rescue and hopes to raise funds to support the construction of the new building.

After fundraising, the hope is to start building before winter or next spring.
