Duluth Man Charged In Mother’s Murder; Summit School Remembers Victim

DULUTH, Minn. — A second-degree murder charge was filed Tuesday in St. Louis County Court against Nathan Davin, 46, of Duluth.

Court documents accuse Davin of shooting his mother, MaeDean Davin, 74, of Duluth in the face at close range while she sat in her recliner.

Officers on scene described her injury as a “devastating gunshot wound.”

The shooting was reported just before 11 p.m. Sunday at a home in the 1500-block of North 9th Avenue East in Duluth.

Police said Davin first denied shooting his mother and said he woke up to find her dead.

But the story changed at the Duluth Public Safety building while investigators were collecting physical evidence from Davin, including his bloodied boxers.

The criminal complaint said a recording in the interview room caught Davin swearing before saying, “I killed my mother.”

A motive was not clear in the criminal complaint, but Davin was reportedly intoxicated and showed signs or erratic behavior, according to court documents.

Several satanic symbols and phrases were also found spray-painted inside the house.

MaeDean dedicated three years of her life to Summit School in Duluth, working in all age groups until she retired in 2021 to spend more time with her great grandson.

In a statement on social media Tuesday, Summit School wrote:

“We were shocked and saddened to hear the news of the weekend events in our neighborhood. Those of us that knew MaeDean were lucky to work with her here at Summit and get to know the sassy grandma that she loved to be. After speaking with the Summit community, we are hoping to plant a memorial tree with fencing and a plaque to honor her memory and the work she did here. Feel free to share fond memories of Ms. MaeDean here to honor her as well.”

Meanwhile, a GoFundMe has been set up to help support MaeDean’s grandchildren, who were more like her own children, according to the family’s post.
