UMD Freshmen Settling into Dorms Ahead of Fall Semester

DULUTH, Minn.– The city of Duluth is welcoming in 2,000 new bulldogs at University Minnesota Duluth.

Because today, welcome week is kicking off with move in day!

Like cogs in a machine, lots of staff and volunteers have geared up for this big day.

Today is all about acclimating the students and getting them settled for the school year.

For this fall semester, UMD’s housing is at near capacity, and guaranteed housing for all applicants.

And with the opportunity to live on campus, one official says, it comes with its perks.

“As someone who lived on campus my whole time, I really hope that they take advantage of the ability to make connections, meet people who they may not have otherwise met without the experience of living on campus and maybe learning some new skills, meeting some other or learning some different things about how other people live and make lifelong friends,” said Joe Hazelton, Director of Housing & Residence Life, UMD.

And even for the UMD Chancelor, this day hits home for him too.

He said, it’s an experience for the whole family.

“I’ve got two college aged daughters myself, so I know what it’s like to send kids off to college. And so, part of today, for me isn’t just welcoming the undergraduates that are joining the University, but it’s welcoming their families and parents who may be sending their first child off to college, and just kind of helping them to say ‘it’s goanna be okay. I know what it’s like’,” beamed Charles Nies, UMD Chancelor.

For the rest of the week, both new and returning bulldogs can look forward to numerous festivities.

Bulldogs can look forward to activities such as the bulldog scramble group photo, carnival, and kickball.
