Duluth Public Schools Welcoming New Bus Drivers
DULUTH, Minn. — With classes beginning in September, Duluth Public Schools has been working hard to prepare their newest group of bus drivers, as they near their introduction to both the city and its students.
“We’re excited about the start of the year. We did a training program this summer that was something new, trying to get some more drivers in the door.” said Duluth Public Schools Transportation Manager Jeremy Kasapidis.
The program in question, part of the Minnesota Department of Education’s “Grow Your Own” initiative, began July 1, and has been ongoing over the course of the summer as the new recruits get accustomed to the responsibility of being a driver.
“We bring in prospective candidate, they come in, they do their online training. They ride along with drivers, so they learn the routes.” said Kasapidis. “They learn how to manage kids firsthand with an experienced driver, they go through a ‘behind-the-wheel’ training process. We’ve got trainers that bring them out, take them on a course, take them on roads, bring them through routes, have them drive through all that stuff, and then by the time they get through that it’s close to four weeks, and then they go in and they take their drivers exam and hopefully pass and become a driver.”
The additional cover not only offers current drivers more flexibility, it keeps workers like Kasapidis out of the drivers’ seats themselves.
“For office people, we are about seventh in line now if people call in, so we’re really excited about that.”
The current crop of drivers are just as excited to have some weight lifted from their shoulders.
“it’s a relief for them. So they don’t have to feel like they’re have to be here every day, all the time.” said Kasapidis
