UMD Football to Open Conference Play with Road Contest at Concordia-St. Paul

UMD has won the last 11 meetings against Concordia-St. Paul.

DULUTH, Minn.- It was back to work for the UMD football team Tuesday afternoon after they opened up the season with a controlling 35 to 7 victory over Winona State last Thursday.

Bulldogs beginning preparation for a Concordia-St. Paul squad, who UMD has won the last 11 meetings, dating back to 2005.

On top of that, the Bulldogs have averaged 42 points per game against the Golden Bears.

Head Coach Curt Wiese said not to look too much into those stats, adding that in the NSIC conference it can be anyone’s game.

“Probably not a lot different than what’s it’s going to be from last year. I think every team, top to bottom is going to be competitive so we’re looking to have a good game this weekend against Concordia. They opened up with a loss. We opened up with a win. Both we’re non-conference. This is our first opportunity to be in a conference game and get to 1-0 in the conference,” said Wiese.

One of the breakout stars for UMD in week one was tight end Luke Dehnicke, who had 6 catches, 152 yards, and one touchdown against the Warriors.

“It was a really good game plan from coach Vogler, our O.C. Kyle was just hitting me, I was open, it worked out perfect,” said Dehnicke.

“Luke Dehnicke didn’t surprise us on Thursday night. He’s had a really good fall camp. We had a pretty good idea on what we had with Luke. It was fun to be able to get him as many touches as you can. He made the most out of every opportunity he had too. So we look to continue to build him into our offense along with some other guys here hopefully that will be back this week,” added Wiese.

UMD is 5-2 overall in St. Paul at the home of the Golden Bears. They’ll try to make it 6-2 on Saturday night at 6:30 PM.
