UMD Releases Statement Amid Possible Strike By Teamsters 320
DULUTH, Minn. – UMD responded Sunday evening to a possible strike by its service workers with Teamsters Local 320, which involves those in custodial, maintenance and food service.
This update comes after the union voted down the university’s “last, best and final offer” on Friday.
“While we respect our employees’ rights to collective bargaining, our priority remains ensuring that vital services are provided for our University community. We have a comprehensive plan in place if a strike occurs. In that situation, some delays or minor disruptions may occur, and we appreciate your patience and understanding,” UMD said in a statement through email to students Sunday.
“We hope a resolution can be reached that supports our employees and ensures that the University remains a good financial steward. Above all, we are committed to minimizing the impact on our students and maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment for all,” the statement went on to say.
In a statement Friday, Teamsters Local 320 said the following in quotes from multiple union leaders:
“Our goal is not to strike, but to secure an agreement that meets the needs of University Teamsters.”
“The ball is now in the University’s court to make this right or face a work stoppage.”
“The University better get right with its Teamster workers or a strike is imminent.”
