Fall Hawk Migration in Full Swing
DULUTH, Minn.– Birders were ready with binoculars, cameras and counters, because right now, fall hawk migration is in full swing.
Every fall, guests flock near and far to visit the cliffside birding site.
Today specifically, counters kept busy with bald eagles, sharp shinned hawks, and broad winged hawks.
This year, Hawk Ridge broke the state record with daily bluejay sightings.
Last week, seeing 15,000 in one day. Normally, it’s around 1,000.
The Education Director said Hawk Ridge is a hidden gem for Duluth.
“It’s the beginning of the Mississippi flyway, which is the biggest one in North America. We know from watching radar and watching birds that 60 to 75% of the birds that migrate use this flyway. So here we are, right smack in the middle of it,” said Margie Menzies, Education Director Hawk Ridge.
It is free to visit Hawk Ridge, and staff has extra binoculars on hand.
Hawk Ridge typically ends their fall season in early October.
