Woman Rescued After Being Swept Into Lake Superior

GRAND MARIAS, Minn. — Tragedy was avoided over the weekend After a sightseer Was swept into the cold and choppy waters of Lake Superior in Grand Marais.

The water emergency happened around 4:50 p.m. Sunday.

Four people were out walking to the lighthouse when one of them was pulled into the lake by waves, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office.

The woman’s friends and a nearby angler eventually rescued her from the rough water.

The woman had a bad headache and was too weak to walk after.

Sheriff Deputy Will Sandstrom arrived to help her to safer, warmer ground.

“Although Lake Superior is a tremendous sight when the winds are blowing strong, the lake is not forgiving when you make a mistake. Large waves will knock you into the water and strong currents can make it impossible to get to safety. Expiration in water that cold does not take long,” said Sheriff Pat Eliason.
