Caregiver accused of stealing $10,000+ from vulnerable adult they were caring for
DULUTH, Min. – A Minnesota Department of Health report say a caregiver with a Duluth comprehensive home care agency stole money from one of their clients.
The report say the, “The [employee] stole the client’s bank card the first day the [employee] worked in the client’s home and fraudulently used the bank card to pay tuition expenses and order online items.”
The home care agency was hired to assist with daily services because the client had vision problems and other health concerns.
The client’s family discovered their bank card was missing and five fraudulent transactions showed-up on a bank statement.
Upon the discovery a police report was filed.
The Minnesota Department of Health investigation, which concluded on October 30, 2025, says law enforcement discovered, “an institute of higher learning had verified [the employee] had used the bank card for education expenses.”
The report says employee was actually terminated from their job even before learning of the alleged theft. The report say their employment “had ended for other reasons.”
The unauthorized charges totaled more than ten thousand dollars. The institute of high education returned the money to the victim of the theft.
The client told Minnesota Department of Health said they did not like employee, but liked the business they worked for. Minnesota Department of Health report said the client, “continued to employ the home care agency and had no complaints about the service provided by current agency staff.” The report continued to say, “A family member stated the client continued to employ the home care agency and was happy with the current staff.”
The company the person worked for, Cornerstone Caregiving, released a statement to FOX21 saying, “Cornerstone Caregiving takes any allegation involving client safety or financial integrity with the utmost seriousness. In addition to an internal review and terminating the caregiver, Cornerstone fully cooperated with the state’s audit, and the office was found to be in substantial compliance. Additionally, Cornerstone took all appropriate steps to ensure the client did not sustain any financial loss. We look forward to continuing to serve Duluth’s seniors with compassion and care.”
The Minnesota Department of Health report was also sent to the St. Louis County Attorney, Duluth City Attorney, and Duluth Police Department.
Minnesota Department of Health report ends with, “[the employee] did not respond to the investigator’s request for an interview. In conclusion, the Minnesota Department of Health determined financial exploitation was substantiated.”
It is unclear if charges have been filed in this case. The employee’s name was not noted in the report.
