Surfers spend the snow day catching some waves

DULUTH, Minn.– During a snow day, you may find people outside making snowmen, and snow angels.

But for some people, they’re hoping to do something a little more adventurous.

All around Brighton beach and French River Wayside, handfuls of surfers kept busy catching some waves.

Before hitting the water, they make sure to have good wetsuits, leashes for boards, and good swimming skills.

One of the surfers said he’s been doing this now for four winters, and it is still an exhilarating feeling.

“Honestly, all the time, it’s pretty humbling, because you don’t always expect when the big waves are coming, but then they kind of come out of nowhere and catch you by surprise, and you kind of just got to deal with it. Sometimes you get tossed underwater and kind of get held down, and its instant brain freeze as soon as you go underwater. So, it can be a pretty challenging,” explained Grant Abens, a surfer.

Abens said there’s an entire community of surfers in Duluth dedicated to meeting up and riding waves together.
