Great Lakes Aquarium mourns loss of Bogey, 26-year-old bald eagle
DULUTH, Minn. — Great Lakes Aquarium announced the death of longtime resident Bogey the bald eagle, who was 26-years-old.
After a period of declining health, the decision was made to humanely euthanize Bogey.
X-rays taken in June revealed Bogey had significant arthritis, and recently he began to struggle with standing and eating.
Bogey first arrived at Great Lakes Aquarium from the Bird Treatment and Learning Center in Alaska in 2001.
He got his name after falling from his nest on the edge of a golf course, resulting in nerve damage that left him unable to survive in the wild
The aquarium said, while healthy bald eagles can live into their thirties or even forties, Bogey’s early challenges likely contributed to his shortened life span.
“His presence at the Aquarium has touched the hearts of countless guests, staff, and volunteers over the years, and his passing leaves a deep void in our community,” the Great Lakes Aquarium said.
