KNIFE RIVER, Minn.– The near century old ship gifted from the city of Duluth is receiving its finishing touches from its restoration process.

Knife River had received the Leif Erickson Viking ship back in 2021.

But the ship first arrived in the Twin Ports in 1921 and has been worked on ever since.

Features such as the dragon head and tail just now came out of storage to nearly complete it.

And even with an updated appearance, it’s important to remember the historical significance.

“One thing people don’t know is in the Viking boat, Leif Erickson is probably more popular in Norway than it is here. Again, because the historical significance and demonstrating that Leif Erickson may indeed have discovered the first European discovered in North America,” said Paul von Goertz, Knife River Heritage and Cultural Center.

Ship enthusiasts should stay tuned for 2026, because big plans are in the works to celebrate its 100th birthday.
