Chum warming shelter sees record breaking numbers

DULUTH, Minn.– After a stretch of sub-zero temps, chum staff say record-breaking numbers of people are turning to the warming shelter, and they need extra support.

The peer recovery specialist at chum told FOX 21 they’ve noticed a drop in winter gear donations.

This has led to several cases of frostbite that could result in medical attention.

In December, their warming shelter usually serves 60 to 70 people a night.

But this past weekend, 99 people showed up in just one night.

With budget and program cuts adding to the strain, chum staff say there are plenty of ways the community can help.

“We are always looking for extra volunteers and support. Snacks are a big one on days like those. We so the warming center does not have a licensed kitchen. It’s not able to make food and pass out food, but they can pass out any prepackaged snacks or anything that can be popped in a microwave, you know, something really quickly for folks to eat,” explained Danna Griffy, peer recovery specialist at chum.

CHUM’s annual Homeless Memorial Vigil is coming up on December 22nd.

It honors members of the homeless community who passed away this last year and offers the community a chance to reflect and give back.
