Amazon Distribution Center tackling busy holiday season
DULUTH, Minn.– The holidays are here, and for many people, that means finding the perfect gift for their loved ones online.
For the Amazon Distribution Center in Duluth, that means a significant increase in package deliveries.
But the station manager said, it’s been like that for a while.
“The holiday season for us started the day after Thanksgiving. We saw about a 25% increase in our throughput, so going from about 15 to 16,000 to about 18 to 20,000 packages a day getting delivered,” explained Chris Coffee-Prose, station manager at Amazon Distribution Center.
Everything in the building works like a well-oiled machine.
Throughout the day, 6-14 vehicles will arrive, and return to the launch pad up to 6 times a day.
Each driver is expected to deliver a couple hundred packages throughout their shift.
“We were trying to hire about 100 more associates to handle the volume that we were going to have in the season as well. Our DSPs were hiring pretty heavily to be able to maintain those routes to get that out,” said Coffee-Prose.
All of this leads up to one ultimate goal for the Amazon team.
“Nothing stays in this building, that it gets out day of and gets to our customers,” added Coffee-Prose.
