Minnesota Power terminates partnership with proposed NTEC in Superior

DULUTH, Minn. — Minnesota Power has officially terminated its partnership with the proposed natural gas power plant in Superior known as NTEC.

Minnesota Power said “permitting and litigation delays” around the Nemadji Trail Energy Center (NTEC) project are factors in the decision.

This means, Minnesota Power customers will not receive energy from the plant — if it becomes a reality, according to a news release.

But this doesn’t mean NTEC won’t happen.

Dairyland Power Cooperative remains a 50% owner of the project. Basin Electric Cooperative holds 30% and South Shore Energy owns 20%, according to Minnesota Power.

Minnesota power said it needed to move on from NTEC so it can meet its plan to shut down its coal operations in the coming decade.

Superior Mayor Jim Paine and a majority of the city council have been strongly against NTEC.
