Reward offered for information on pelican shooting

Awpe 9348Wisconsin — A cash reward is being offered for information related to Pelicans being shot in Wisconsin… including one in Ashland that survived lead poisoning from a bullet.

Animal Wellness Action and Center for a Humane Economy’ is offering $2,500 in this case.

That organization and the Raptor Education Group tell Fox21 there has been a rise in American White Pelicans being targeted, which is a protected species.

And while the wildlife rescue groups cover the costs of caring for the birds, the culprits remain unknown.

“We can’t just leave it up to law enforcement, all of us. The citizens have duties to see that the rule of law is enhanced and enforced, and this is exactly what needs to happen. The state legislature needs to improve the law; to enhance it, the existing law enforcement community needs to enforce the law. But for any of that to happen, we need citizen participation” said Wayne Pacelle, President of Animal Wellness Action and the Center for a Humane Economy.

Beyond the pelicans being targeted, leftover lead ammo from activities like deer hunting is also a big concern.

“Lead ammo is deadly long after it leaves the barrel of a weapon, and any state that’s concerned about conservation and animal welfare should forbid lead ammunition.” said Pacelle.

Anyone with information about poaching in our area is encouraged to contact the Wisconsin DNR TIP Line at 1-800-847-9367 or their online tip form.

Meanwhile, there is good news for the pelican recently rescued in Ashland.

The Raptor Education Group says the pelican is recovering better than expected and could be released as early as this spring.
