CSS Women’s Basketball Off to Best Start Since 1987 Season

CSS currently sits at 10-4 on the year, with a MIAC conference record of 5-2.

DULUTH, Minn.- It’s been a historic start to the season for the St. Scholastica women’s basketball team.

The Saints are off to their best start since their 1987 campaign.

CSS currently sits at 10-4 on the year, with a MIAC conference record of 5-2.

On top of the Saints impressive start, the team remains perfect at home, holding a 6-0 record.

But this year’s success didn’t happen overnight, it’s been building over the last several seasons as the Saints were able to stack up recruiting classes over the years.

“Fortunately, a lot of luck in recruiting and some kids that bought in and fed in. Lead by our senior Jackie Johnson who has kind of been with me since the start essentially,” said Saints head coach Jason Schmitz. “Those next few classes have been great for us. Before we were so so young. Last year we didn’t play a single senior. But we’ve had a lot of kids play a lot of minutes in a Saints uniform, so that always helps. Like we started to get old together.”

Despite opening out the season on the right foot, the Saints know that they’re far from their end goal that they want to accomplish this year.

“For us, even though we’ve started well, we know we still have a long way to go. We just have a general motivation to kind of get over the hump finally and make the MIAC playoffs, cause the last two years we finished 7th, just one spot out. So, we know we still got a lot of work to do,” said Schmitz.

“After any win or loss, we still think of what we can improve on and what we can work on,” said Saints forward Kloey Lind.  “Looking at what we can do next just to kind of improve ourselves.”

The Saints have a big MIAC game on Saturday against the 21st ranked Bethel Royals.

Game time is at 1 p.m. at Reif Gymnasium.
