UMD students celebrate the Lunar New Year

DULUTH, Minn. — Students of different cultural backgrounds gathered at UMD to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

2026 marks the Year of the Fire Horse, symbolizing energy, independence, action, and forward momentum.

The event featured festive décor, traditional dishes, and cultural activities honoring zodiac traditions and the diversity of Asian culture.

“I think it’s really important to me and also to my cultures,” said Jesse Want, a student at UMD.

The celebration marked not just the start of the Chinese New Year, but a shared commitment to honoring culture and tradition together.
