UMD Coaches and athletes reflect on Dale “Hoagie” Haagenson’s impact
DULUTH, Minn.– A beloved member of the UMD bulldog community, Dale “Hoagie” Haagenson, passed away Feb. 17.
Athletes, UMD coaches and staff said Hoagie touched the hearts of so many, and his legacy will undoubtedly live on.
“He was so uplifting and caring. I know he cared so deeply about all of us. And we’re all just heartbroken right now, and condolences go out to his family. And he will always be a special part of UMD women’s hockey,” said Laura Schuler, UMD women’s hockey head coach.
Hoagie had well over 40 years of wins losses, and memories with the Bulldogs.
“I think everyone knew what hoagie meant to not just our hockey program, but nor just to UMD, but our community. I’m just very fortunate to have spent 26 years with him. I’ve known him since 1981. But he was certainly a pleasure to have around,” said Scott Sandelin, UMD men’s hockey head coach.
Hoagie was there for UMD basketball, football and, of course, hockey, every step of the way.
Joey Pierce, the men’s UMD hockey captain said, that love was felt off the ice as well.
“There’s so many people he touched in this world and the community. And he’s what it means to be a bulldog. And I think we can all take something away from that,” said Pierce.
With the hockey season continuing, the senior captain for women’s hockey said Hoagie is simply more motivation to give it their all.
“I like to call him the heart and soul of bulldog country. If anything, it just gives us motivation for us to play the rest of the way. He’s meant everything to us. And there’s been a huge hole in the heart of our program,” said Mary Kate O’Brien, UMD women’s hockey senior captain.
A celebration of life for Hoagie will take place Tuesday, Feb. 24 at noon at Amsoil Arena.
In addition to that, a go-fund-me has been made to help cover the costs of end-of-life celebrations.
