Superior Girls Hockey to Battle St. Croix Valley in First State Appearance Since 2023
The Spartans are in search of their first state championship since 2005.
SUPERIOR, Wis.- The Superior girls hockey team snapped a three-year drought on Saturday by shutting out Northland Pines 7 to 0 in the sectional championship.
Now all eyes are on St. Croix Valley in the state semifinals.
The Spartans know the Fusion very well after seeing them in a contest on January 31st. That game went St. Croix Valley’s way as they earned the 3 to 1 win.
This time around, Superior head coach Doug Trentor feels his team is better prepared.
“We know all about them. We know what we have to do. They’re a really talented team. They’re deep. They’re a good skating team, play really good through the neutral zone. So we have to do a lot of stuff to prevent their speed from taking over,” said Trentor.
Superior senior forward Addy Benson is one of the few players that was able to experience the state tournament in the Spartans last trip in 2023. She says she’s been talking to some of the younger players at practice this week to give them an idea of what to expect.
“The biggest piece of advice that we’ve been going by this season has just been to breathe. I think that’s super important because you can’t really do anything well if you’re not focused. It’s just hard to be calm if you’re not just breathing and focusing on one thing at a time,” said Benson.
The Spartans are in search of their first state championship since 2005.
They’ll drop the puck with St. Croix Valley at 7:30 pm on Thursday in Middleton.
