Hibbing/Chisholm’s Rally Comes up Short in OT, Falling 5-4 in Class A Title Game
The Bluejackets end the year with a 26-3-2 record.
ST. PAUL, Minn.- The Hibbing/Chisholm boys hockey team made its first Class A championship game appearance since 1994 on Saturday, taking on Warroad for the Class A title.
The Warriors opened up the championship game out fast, as Conner Lund found the back of the net in the first minute of the contest to give Warroad a 1-0 lead.
Over in the second period, the Bluejackets find life on a power play.
Sophomore defenseman Whitaker Rewertz knocks down the power play goal to tie the game up 1-1 midway through the second period.
But less than a minute goes by, and the Warriors regain the lead.
Ayven Hontvet connects from the face-off circle to give Warroad a 2-1 lead over the Bluejackets.
Under two minutes left in the second period, the Warriors find the back of the net again.
Mooney Shaugabay, the younger brother of UMD forward Jayson Shaugabay, finds Gavin Anderson on the breakaway.
The Warriors took a 3-1 lead into the third period.
At the start of the third, the Bluejackets cut the lead down to one, thanks to a goal by Isaiah Hildenbrand to make it 3-2 in favor of Warroad.
With under five minutes left in the game, the Bluejackets even things up at 3-3 after Rewertz scored his second goal of the game.
Less than a minute later, the Bluejackets keep their momentum going as Benny Galli nails a tough shot to give Hibbing/Chisholm a 4-3 lead with 3:45 left in the game.
However, the Warriors tied the game up 4-4 with under a minute left in the third period to force overtime.
In OT, Shaugabay scored the game-winning goal for Warrod to take down the Bluejackets 5-4 in the Class A championship game.
The Bluejackets end the year with a 26-3-2 record.
