City of Duluth to Address Homelessness
City Council Passed a Non-Binding Resolution Promising to Work on Issues Related to Homelessness
DULUTH, Minn. – This week, the Duluth City Council passed a resolution to focus on the problem of homelessness.
On Monday, a non-binding resolution was passed, which the City Council calls a promise to continue to work on issues related to homelessness.
On any given night, there are an estimated two hundred to three hundred people in Duluth who sleep outside and countless more Duluthians who have been homeless in the past.
The City Council wants to work with people who have experienced homelessness to create housing and ensure individuals without a home are treated with respect.
“One of the really powerful things for me in my involvement with this issue is really getting to know people on a personal basis in our community who have been homeless or currently experiencing homelessness and it’s through those relationships that we make progress on these kinds of issues,” says City Council President Joel Sipress.
Sipress says comforts many take for granted, such as finding a bathroom, can be very difficult for people experiencing homelessness and that solving that and similar problems can help bring dignity to those in crisis situations.
