Shipping Season Around the Corner
Shipping Season Starts Again March 25th
DULUTH, Minn.- Shipping season is starting back up next week, and Duluth could be seeing ships coming in, as soon as Next Sunday.
The St. Lawrence Seaway and the Welland canal which connects Lake Ontario and Lake Erie are opening on Monday, and the locks at Sault Ste Marie are opening on Saturday. This means the twin ports maybe seeing ships moving by the middle of next week.
“That’s the date that the lakers that are laid up in the Duluth Superior harbor are aiming at, and they will be getting ready and departing, many of them, on the 22nd so they can be loaded and waiting at the locks when they open on the 25th,” said Jim Sharrow, the Director of Port Planning and Resiliency for the Duluth Seaway Port Authority.
Experts say Iron ore production is up this year, which could mean having a busier shipping season than last year.
