Hundreds Attend 16th Annual Big Jig Tournament
Over 700 People Gathered to Fish
Community members pulled out their fishing rods Sunday for the big 16th annual Big Jig Ice Fishing Tournament on Island Lake.
Even in the frigidly cold air, more than 700 people turned out to catch some fish for a good cause.
The event is put on in conjunction by the University of Minnesota Duluth’s Athletic Department and Subway.
All of the proceeds benefit UMD Bulldog Student-Athlete scholarships.
“Over the life of the tournament, we have raised over $600,000so far,” said Jay Finnerty, an assistant athletics director at UMD.
It’s a popular event that’s been going on for over a decade, where participants compete to catch the heaviest fish, regardless of what type of fish it is.
The winners receive generous prizes, including a $4,000 cash prize and six-foot tall trophy for the champion.
