Driver Charged after Striking, Killing Hermantown Bicyclist

A 71-year-old man has been charged nearly five months after striking and killing a bicyclist in Hermantown.

Lowell Rudd was charged with misdemeanor Careless Driving and Failure to Keep to the Right.

The charges stem from an incident on September 27 where police were called to the intersection of Lavaque and Morris Thomas Road on reports of a car hitting a bicyclist.

Police say Rudd was driving southbound on Lavaque Road when he crossed the centerline and hit 44-year-old Richard Brill, of Superior.

The investigation revealed that Rudd was speeding and made no attempt to swerve or brake prior to the crash.

Brill was pronounced dead at the scene.
