Scoring Depth Leading Duluth Marshall Girls Hockey to Top 10 Ranking
The Hilltoppers will look to extend their five-game winning streak on Wednesday hosting Chisago Lakes.
DULUTH, Minn. – Over the past few years, the Duluth Marshall girls hockey team has continued to make strides towards success. The Hilltoppers have made three section championship games in the past five seasons and now say this is the year they can make it to state.
And they say that by being a younger team, with just four seniors on their roster. But having players of all ages step up and get on the score sheet has led them to their 7-1 start.
“As a small school, we’ve always had limited numbers so we have to pull from our middle school and just have people all over age wise up and down the lineup. It’s just great to see the younger girls scoring,” junior forward Meredith Boettcher said.
“None of us just rely on ourselves and I think since we know our players will score, we don’t have to depend on ourselves so I think that’s one of the best parts about our team is that the points are all over the board for us,” junior forward Danica Mark added.
That’s led the Hilltoppers to averaging over five goals a game, and they say it’s because of the style that they’re playing and really emphasizing sharing the puck.
“We’ve done a really good job of playing as a team and we’re a puck possession team so I think that makes us even more of a family because no one’s trying to do it on their own. I think we’ve just been working really well together,” Mark said.
“We all love to pass, none of us are selfish and we’ve had some really good plays, really good scoring opportunities and we seem to be always capitalizing so far,” Boettcher added.
