Sipress Speaks Out Against Bills Threatening Duluth’s Sick and Safe Time Leave Efforts
Councilors Will Discuss the Resolution During the City Council Meeting
DULUTH, Minn.- The Minnesota state House and Senate have passed bills that could take away cities like Duluth’s ability to set new public policies that differ from the state’s. Duluth’s City Council is expected to discuss a resolution asking Governor Mark Dayton to not sign the bill into law, during the city council meeting on Monday.
City councilor Joel Sipress says the bill could hurt the city’s efforts in trying to acquire earned sick and safe time for employees.
“Really already 50 communities around the state have already passed resolutions opposing this so called preemption bill, and I think the reason so many communities have done that is, it really strips cities like Duluth and communities all over the state to be responsive to our local constituents.
According to Sipress almost half the workers in Duluth have no access to earned sick and safe time.
The city council meeting is tonight at 7 at the Duluth City hall.
