North Shore Tourism Season Begins

Officials Are Expecting Busiest Summer Ever

TWO HARBORS, Minn. – Once summer weather arrives, the tourism rush is on along Lake Superior’s North Shore.

If the recent trend continues, this could be some destinations’ busiest season yet.

The North Shore has always been a favorite Minnesota vacation spot.

“When the sun is shining, people like to take rides up from the Twin Cities and see the lake,” says Janelle Jones, President and CEO of the Two Harbors Area Chamber of Commerce.

Now, it’s more popular than ever.

“People are rediscovering, reconnecting with the outdoors and outdoor activities as a whole,” says Nick Hoffmann, park ranger at Gooseberry Falls State Park.

The park has seen attendance rise dramatically over the last few years and campsites are already filling up this summer.

“If you’re thinking about coming up to Gooseberry or camping anywhere on the shore, might not be a bad time to go ahead and make that reservation,” says Hoffmann.

Once big events start happening along the shore, business picks up even more.

“Grandma’s Marathon is kind of a big kickoff weekend for us,” says Jones. “The marathon starts here in Two Harbors and so does the tourism season really.”

So start making plans to be sure you have a chance to enjoy your favorite Lake Superior activity.

“We see tons of people coming through here until, we always say, until the last leaf falls in the fall time because, as long as the weather’s nice, people love to come up here,” says Jones.

Officials say they’re preparing for their busiest season ever. So if you love hiking, kayaking, mountain biking, or just being outside, the North Shore will have plenty to offer this summer.
