S.S. Meteor Whaleback Museum Open for the Season
Superior Museum Offered Free Ship Tours on Opening Day
SUPERIOR, Wis. – It may feel like fall weather outside, but that didn’t stop a popular attraction in Superior from opening up for the summer season.
And to celebrate, the S.S. Meteor Museum gave free tours.
These innovative ships were called Whalebacks for their cigar-shaped steel hulls that rode low to the water when loaded with cargo.
“It’s older than almost all the other ships in the docks around here today and it’s just something most people haven’t seen before and they don’t have any opportunity to see it,” says Meteor tour guide Mackenzie Jardine.
The museum also features exhibits on Great Lakes shipwrecks and the history of shipbuilding in the Twin Ports.
