Bayfield Tourism Still Hurting From Soft Winter

Bayfield’s economy thrives off of tourism, and although its peak season is in the summer, tourists visit the ice caves and Apostle Islands when the lake freezes over.

But this season has been a real damper.

The lake doesn’t have enough ice on it, and businesses in the city say it’s not helping their already slow season.

“When the ice caves are open, the last few years it’s been up to a couple weeks, than the town is just crazy, hopping, busy,” said Amy Sherrard, one of the owners of Morty’s Pub.

Even without the ice caves being easily accessible, Bayfield and its surrounding areas have other attractions, like a sled dog race coming up in two weeks.
