Three People Rescued after Sailboat Capsizes in Duluth Harbor

DULUTH, Minn. – The crew of a Coast Guard Cutter Alder small boat rescued three people early Monday evening, after the crew witnessed a 15-foot sailboat capsize in the Duluth Harbor.

Around 6 p.m., the crew was conducting line-handling drills near the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge when they witnessed the sailboat capsize in the harbor about a mile from their location.

Once the crew arrived on scene, they rescued three people from atop their overturned sailboat and transferred them to a Coast Guard Station Duluth boat. The sailboat was then righted by the Station Duluth crew and towed to a local marina.

The three boaters told the Coast Guard crew that they had been in the water less than five minutes, according a release.

The water temperature was reported to be in the mid-30s at the time of the incident. No injuries have been reported.
