Blue Angels Arrive in Duluth

Navy Demonstration Squadron to Appear at Duluth Air and Aviation Expo

DULUTH, Minn. – If you heard loud noises coming from the sky Thursday afternoon, it was likely the Blue Angels.

The U.S. Navy’s demonstration squadron arrived for this year’s Duluth Air and Aviation Expo.

The Blue Angels started in the 1940’s and appear at air shows across the country from March to November.  Pilots and flight crews rotate regularly, but one pilot we spoke to was in Duluth for the 2008 airshow.

“I’ve had the privilege of being here before, and it’s such an awesome part of our country, it’s such a cool place to be,” said Cdr. Frank Weisser, Lead Solo Pilot.  “For people that haven’t had the experience up here, I’m excited for them.”

The Blue Angels couldn’t fly without a team of maintainers keeping the planes ready to go.  One maintainer we spoke to, Marine Staff Sargent Jonathan Grams, is from Minnesota and is excited to be home.

“It’s a good opportunity to come out and see my family and work at the same time,” said Grams.

The air show runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.  The Blue Angels are scheduled to perform both days.
